World’s MOST ferocious and aggressive termite
found on Gold Coast

An established nest of the world’s most ferocious and aggressive termite, the Mastotermes darwiniensis, has been discovered on the Gold Coast amid fears it could cause hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage to property.

Mastotermes darwiniensis, known as the Giant Northern Termite, is the most primitive of the commercially significant species. It shows an ability for sub-colonies to split from the main colony and produce queens, without a mating flight.  Eventually a network of  interconnecting sub-colonies are established, which makes control difficult. These large termites can devastate buildings, bridges, poles, trees and crops such as sugarcane. Mastotermes were not thought to live south of the Tropic of Capricorn but a colony of the fast-spreading species has been found in a western Gold Coast suburb, The Gold Coast Bulletin reported.

It is bigger, more aggressive and has a far greater appetite than any other termite species.

Mastotermes can cause servere damage in as little as 12 weeks and is so aggressive it has been known to eat electrical wiring, the tyres of cane tractors, and even bitumen in northern Australia.

It is also known to ringbark trees, kill living trees and shrubs, attack fruit, vegetable and sugarcane crops and is not adverse to attacking leather and hide, salt and flour, metals, plastic and glass.

Termite experts, and in entomology handbooks, they describe this species as “the world’s most destructive”.
Mastotermes are blamed for property damage which costs  millions of dollars each year in northern Australia.

The Mastotermes colony was discovered in a tree stump during an annual termite pest inspection.
